Estacion de Valdezcaray (Spagna) - martedì 21 agosto 2012 - Di tutto e di più nella quarta tappa della Vuelta Espana 2012, la Barakaldo-Estacion de Valdezcaray di 160,6 chilometri con il secondo arrivo in salita. Innanzitutto, il vincitore: scappato via al chilometro zero assieme al tedesco Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), regolato senza pietà in una volata a due, al kazako Assan Bazayev (Astana) e agli spagnoli Luis Angel Maté Mardones (Cofidis) e Jesus Rosendo Prado (Andalucia), Simon Clarke sceglie uno dei palcoscenici più importanti per cogliere il suo primo centro tra i professionisti (l'altro, ottenuto nel 2008 al Giro del Giappone, lo ottenne da dilettante). «Sapevo che Toni sarebbe stato molto forte - il commento del 26enne australiano dell'Orica-GreenEdge che vanta  anche un buon passato da pistard - C'era un pò di vento, siamo riusciti a staccare Basayev e quando siamo rimasti soli ho cercato di cogliere l'attimo giusto. L'ho lasciato davanti, era l'unico modo per vincere: è la mia prima affermazione tra i professionisti e sono molto felice». Clarke e Martin, campione del mondo e argento olimpico a cronometro, facevano il vuoto proprio salendo verso il traguardo e resistevano al tentativo di ritorno di Bazayev, terzo. Detto dell'esultanza di Marcos Garcia, quarto ma convinto di aver vinto, la tappa odierna si è caratterizzata anche per la caduta a 31 km dalla fine di Alejandro Valverde. Il murciano della Movistar, caduto a terra assieme a quasi tutti i Liquigas, veniva immediatamente attaccato dagli uomini della Sky: un 'affronto', questo, che rischia di condizionare tutto il resto della Vuelta.
La maglia rossa cambia così proprietario e viene indossata da un altro idolo di casa, Joaquin 'Purito' Rodriguez, capitano della Katusha, che riesce a mettersi in testa alla classifica con un solo secondo di vantaggio sul britannico Christopher Froome e 5" sul fuoriclasse madrileno Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank). E proprio Froome, secondo al Tour alle spalle di Wiggins, si mangia le mani, visto che nel finale teneva testa al ritmo imposto da Contador (assieme a Roche e, per un tratto, a Navarro) prima che i due big decidessero di rientrare nei ranghi per non spendere troppe energie. Una scelta che è costata la maglia a Froome e fors'anche a Contador, ancora una volta apparso più che brillante sulle strade del suo rientro in gruppo. Valverde comunque riusciva a limitare i danni così come Eros Capecchi: la graduatoria è a dir poco corta, visto che i primi diciassette sono raccolti in 57".
Il team manager della Movistar, Eusebio Unzue, non ha usato perifrasi quando ha sferrato il proprio attacco verbale al team Sky. «Hanno prima causato la caduta e poi sono partiti a tutta, dopo che hanno mandato a terra numerosi corridori - ha detto -. Non si può far finta che 20 corridori non siano mai caduti».
«Non hanno avuto il coraggio per fermarsi - è stato il commento di Valverde - sono antisportivi, il loro comportamento è da condannare». Una stilettata anche al suo connazionale Joaquin Rodriguez, nuovo leader della classifica: «A Purito potrà anche non essere piaciuto il comportamento della Sky, però se ne è giovato». Valverde ha assicurato che perdere la maglia rossa poteva anche rientrare nei suo piani, ma bisognava essere «più sportivi».
Dal canto suo, Nicolas Portal, ds del team Sky ha spiegato che «Flecha ha attaccato e non ha provocato alcuna caduta». «Le parole di Unzue sono assolutamente false», ha aggiunto alla tv spagnola. Il gesto del Team Sky ha costretto Valverde a un inseguimento a tutta, in apnea e in salita: alla fine, tuttavia, lo spagnolo e Capecchi hanno pagato poco meno di un minuto rispetto ai migliori. Valverde, a un certo punto, si è pure affiancato all'ammiraglia del Team Sky, mandando a quel paese gli occupanti.
Difficile che domani cambi qualcosa: la quinta frazione, la Logrono-Logrono di 168 chilometri, si disputerà in un circuito di 21 da ripetere otto volte. Spazio dunque ai velocisti della Vuelta, tra i quali gli italiani Daniele Bennati ed Elia Viviani.

TEAM KATUSHA - After just four stages, Joaquim Rodriguez has already taken the red jersey as he moved to the first place in general classification: 'Purito' reached the finishing line of Valdezcaray, after 160 kilometers, in 18th position with the group of the other favorite riders, 55'' ahead of the previous leader Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) involved in a crash with 30 kilometers to go. Now the leader of Katusha Team is 1'' ahead of Christopher Froome (Sky), 5'' over Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff) and 9'' over the Rabobank duo Bauke Mollema and Robert Gesink. The race was characterized by a five-man breakaway: Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge), Assan Bazayev (Astana), Luis Angel Matè (Cofidis) and Jesus Rosendo (Andalucia) took advantage of the space left by the group and reached a highest gap of more than 12'. The race lived his crucial moment in the last climbing, in Orduna, around 8 kilometers with an average pendence of 7.8%: Contador, together with his teammate Daniel Navarro, tried to attack followed by Froome and Nicholas Roche (Ag2r-La Mondiale). The group, leaded by Daniel Moreno, took under control this try, and when the climbing started to be less steep neutralized the attack: only Roche didn't give up and gained 9'' over the chasing group. Meanwhile, in the breakaway, only Clarke and Martin managed to stay ahead and fight for win, with Bazayev a little behind: in the two-man sprint, Martin tried  to anticipate his rush but Clarke was faster. Third position for Bazayev, while the main group reached the finishing line 1'04'' behind, with Rodriguez new leader.
"I didn't expect to take the jersey today - said 'Purito' - obviously I'm happy, but I'd rather win yesterday's stage. Obviously this doesn't change anything: this first position gives me strong motivations in order to achieve my goal, which is a good position in final classification, but the gaps are still very narrow and everything can happen. I thought today would have been a calm stage  but from the crash on the group kept a very high pace. I didn't expect great attacks in that climbing, but when Contador tried I suffered a little bit: so I preferred to keep my own pace and try to close the gap when the road started to get flatter. In the beginning we didn't realize Valverde was involved in the crash, but when Intxausti came to tell me I preferred my teammates to stop to lead and pull the group: I'm not criticizing the choice of other teams, but I thought it was the right thing to do".

OMEGA PHARMA - Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Tony Martin went for the stage win in the 160.6km Stage 4 of La Vuelta a Espana on Tuesday. He battled his way to a two-up sprint, and finished 2nd. Martin and eventual race winner Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEDGE) separated themselves from an original five rider break, which escaped just a few kilometers into the race and built up more than 13 minutes of a gap at one point.
Martin and Clarke attacked just kilometers into the 13.4km Category 1 climb Estacion de Valedzcaray, which averaged 5.2% with a maximum gradient of 9 percent. While the gap was reduced to just minutes in the final kilometers, the gap was more than enough for the two riders to focus on beating each other to the line for the stage win.
"I was motivated to go into the breakaway," Martin said. "All the team was in the front in the first kilometers. I took the first attack and we went immediately. The pace in the breakaway was really good, we collaborated very well. In the last climb I hadn't the energy to make the difference, especially because of the heat. It was another incredibly hot day.  I tried to leave him to take the lead but he stayed with me. I launched the sprint but I knew he was faster then me. I'm happy about my race. Today was really hot and wasn't so easy to stay in the front with only five guys. My condition is improving. I trained good before coming here and I'm really looking forward to the time trial next week and — why not — to try to grab a stage victory in one of the next stages."
